As much as we do not want to admit it, autumn is upon us and the glorious summertime is over. However, there are a lot of positives that come with the change of season, not least that we also gain an hour of sleep!
This is the time of year when we love to be cosy. The summer outfits go to the back of the wardrobe and the jumpers, cardigans and sweaters start to come out. It’s also time to enjoy hearty, warming food while we snuggle up indoors away from the cold.
We all want to make our homes as cosy as possible for the next few months and the good news is you don’t have to spend a fortune doing so. Here are 3 ways to create a cosy home this autumn.
Let there be light
Creating an autumnal glow in your home is one of the easiest ways to create a room that looks and feels cosy. Lighting helps to set the right mood and ambience and there is nothing better than walking into room that welcomes you with a warm, amber hue.
Lamps are a quick way to do this, and by simply changing the lightbulb to a lower wattage you reduce the glare and create an intimate setting. Alternatively you can try some plain or scented candles so you have a tranquil place to relax in. Real or fake fires also work just as well, and ensure you want to stay huddled up on the sofa for hours on end.
Build a cosy corner
With house prices higher than ever, more and more people are choosing to stay in their current homes and make the most of the space they have. If you can’t afford to renovate and add an extension, you can still get creative around the home.
Transform an unused alcove or corner into a cosy space that will have everyone rushing to spend time there. The simple addition of some cushions, pillows, thick blankets and dim lighting can make all the difference. It might be a place under the stairs, or somewhere in the backend of the living room. You can even do the same to an armchair to make it even more inviting on those cold, dark nights.
Lay down some rugs
Rugs are always a popular choice for use throughout the year but they really come into their own during autumn and winter. Not only can they transform a room quickly thanks to their designs and colour, but they also add another layer of insulation to keep the warmth trapped inside.
There are so many styles of rugs available it’s impossible not to find one that will work for you. The variation in size also offers great options in how you want to position them in one or several rooms. You can pick out a large centrepiece rug that serves as the focal point of the room, or if space permits, buy a few smaller rugs that can be laid indifferent spots.
